Перед началом сезона 1972-73 гг, впервые в истории хоккея была организована серия матчей между лучшими профессионалами Канады и сборной Советского Союза. Первые четыре игры прошли в Канаде, остальные в Москве.Команда СССР одержала уверенную победу в первом поединке. Играя на высоких скоростях и показывая комбинационный стиль, сборная Советского Союза одержала также победу в четвёртой встрече и повела после канадской половины серии, +2=1-1.В Москве, в присутствии руководителей страны, сборная СССР выиграла пятый матч, и победа в серии оказалась практически в руках советских хоккеистов. Но канадцы в каждом поединке боролись до конца и в итоге сумели переломить ход и одержать победы в последних трёх матчах. В восьмом поединке сборная СССР вела после первых двух периодов 5:3, однако итог - 6:5 в пользу североамериканцев - решающий гол за 34 секунды до финальной сирены забросил Пол Хендерсон.
