Давным-давно былины в народе называли старинами, ведь они рассказывали о важных событиях и героях старины. Повествование велось особым певцом-сказителем. Перебирая струны гуслей, сказитель нараспев рассказывал о ратных подвигах богатырей и героических событиях. С появлением письменности былины стали не только передавать из уст в уста, но и записывать. В наше время из-за особого, напевного языка и множества устаревших слов былины пересказывают для детей известные фольклористы.
