Николай Степанович Гумилёв (1886—1921), писатель Серебряного века, создатель школы акмеизма, более известен как поэт и переводчик, нежели как прозаик и литературный критик. В сравнении с поэтическим наследием его прозаических произведений не так уж много, хотя некоторые исследователи полагают, что, проживи он больше, возможно, все сложилось бы иначе, ведь его прозаический стиль только начал складываться в неоконченной повести «Веселые братья». Однако и в стихах, и в прозе Н. Гумилёв придерживался единого принципа: «Акмеистом труднее быть, чем символистом, как труднее построить собор, чем башню. А один из принципов нового направления — всегда идти по линии наибольшего сопротивления».В сборник вошли поэтические циклы «Романтические цветы», «Жемчуга», «Чужое небо», «Колчан», «Костер», «Фарфоровый павильон», «Огненный столп»; а также рассказы, автобиографические записки и повесть «Веселые братья».
