В настоящей книге представлен перевод первой кантики величайшего памятника мировой культуры — «Божественной комедии» (1308–1321), выполненный членом-корреспондентом РАН, доктором педагогических наук В.Г. Маранцманом. Данте Алигьери, образованнейший человек своего времени, отразил в своей поэме представления о мире, знания и культуру Средневековья во всей полноте, создав таким образом настоящую средневековую энциклопедию научных, политических, философских, этических, богословских знаний. Он соединил в своем творении традиционный жанр «хождений» в загробный мир и новаторское отражение современности. В первой части поэмы описан путь по всем девяти концентрическим кругам ада, образующим колоссальную воронку, сужающийся конец которой примыкает к центру земли. Это путь от преддверия, в котором обитают души нерешительных, ничтожных людей, до встречи с Люцифером.
